Our imagination and ability to visualize are incredibly fascinating! The first time we were ever read or
told a story as a young child we were exposed to the beauty of imagery. The enchanted stories that
filled our imagination and hearts with joy and excitement can still be recalled with fond memories
long after our childhood. We use imagery every day to help us in our daily tasks- picturing in our
minds directions to get somewhere, where we last left something in our home, retelling the plot to a
movie we last saw or listening to a ballgame on the radio.
We use imagery constantly without even thinking of it. It is a natural process.
Have you ever found yourself in a challenging situation? Perhaps you are at the gym and are trying
to get through your last few minutes on the treadmill but you are losing steam. Have you ever found
yourself imagining you were somewhere else, maybe on a vacation, or relaxing by the pool
somewhere or simply getting through with no effort at all? By using our imagery, we can take
ourselves to different places in our minds and that can give us
strength. Do you remember that old trick: If you have any fear speaking in front of a group of
people, "imagine" them all in their undergarments? As silly as it may seem, it works so well because
it takes you out of the uncomfortable feeling and replaces it with something pleasant or funny and
thus, allows you to accomplish the task at hand with ease. This is a great tool for anyone of any
age. The benefits are endless. The self-empowerment one can have with this tool alone can make
such a difference.
Everyone has different abilities to imagine, visualize or pretend in their mind, but no matter how you
do it, be prepared- it is powerful! Some people imagine and they may not see anything right away
but they may get their answers by the presence of a strong feeling, a warmth or a sense of
happiness or joy. Others may hear sounds or the aroma may bring them to a special place. Others
may see a full movie playing in their mind with a variety of senses all at once. Every way is perfect
because no 2 minds are exactly alike. Wherever you are on that spectrum, rest assured, like
anything in this world, you can get better with practice.
The more you experience imagery, the easier and more meaningful it becomes and you can use it
to help you enhance your life.
Your subconscious mind is a treasure trove of information waiting to be explored.
